Cultural Evolution

چکیده

Our understandings of civilizations on Earth inevitably influence speculation about extraterrestrial civilizations. Specifically, our assumptions about the development of Earth’s societies continually shape our conjectures about alien societies, on topics including the probability of their existence, their possible characteristics, appropriate search strategies, and the wisdom of seeking contact. It is worthwhile, therefore, to scrutinize those original assumptions. To that end, this paper addresses two questions. First, how can we use multidisciplinary approaches to understand cultural evolution on Earth? Second, how can we use our knowledge of Earth’s civilizations to our best advantage in SETI?

Regulatory Traits in Cultural Evolution

We call “regulatory traits” those cultural traits that are transmitted through cultural interactions and, at the same time, change individual behaviors directly influencing the outcome of future cultural interactions. The cultural dynamics of some of those traits are studied through simple simulations. In particular, we consider the cultural evolution of traits determining the propensity to cop...

Divergent Cumulative Cultural Evolution

Divergent cumulative cultural evolution occurs when the cultural evolutionary trajectory diverges from the biological evolutionary trajectory. We consider the conditions under which divergent cumulative cultural evolution can occur. We hypothesize that two conditions are necessary. First that genetic and cultural information are stored separately in the agent. Second cultural information must b...

Enquire within: cultural evolution and cognitive science.

Cultural evolution and cognitive science need each other. Cultural evolution needs cognitive science to find out whether the conditions necessary for Darwinian evolution are met in the cultural domain. Cognitive science needs cultural evolution to explain the origins of distinctively human cognitive processes. Focusing on the first question, I argue that cultural evolutionists can get empirical...

If we are all cultural Darwinians what’s the fuss about? Clarifying recent disagreements in the field of cultural evolution

Cultural evolution studies are characterized by the notion that culture evolves accordingly to broadly Darwinian principles. Yet how far the analogy between cultural and genetic evolution should be pushed is open to debate. Here, we examine a recent disagreement that concerns the extent to which cultural transmission should be considered a preservative mechanism allowing selection among differe...
